Dirt Devil Featherlite SD40100 Cyclonic Canister Vacuum Review

The Dirt Devil Featherlite SD40100 is an excellent vacuum for those looking for something lightweight and reasonably priced, that works well on a hard-surfaced floor. As it is a canister vacuum, its much more portable than an upright, and works well on most surfaces.

The SD40100 has just a 10 amp motor, but the suction power of this vacuum does not feel like just 10 amps. It has amazing suction ability, and when cleaning up on dense carpet, the bleed port might even need to be opened in order to run along the carpeted area smoothly. This can lead to some problems with deep pile carpeting, however, where the vacuum will stick to the carpet and be difficult to move; it can also have problems with animal hair, as the hairs can get caught in the bristles of the nozzle and end up having to be cleaned separately.

  • powerful suction
  • great value for money
  • small form factor and light weight
  • sensitive on/off switch
  • removable HEPA filter and exhaust filter
  • retractable power cord
  • rear wheels make it easy to maneuver around

  • plastic somewhat low quality and fragile
  • requires regular filter cleaning to maintain high suction
  • can struggle in some carpeted areas
  • hose and wand are rather short
  • power cord not too long

Main Points

The SD40100 is an excellent vacuum for those who do not have much in the way of carpeting, because its high suction strength, the brush on the nozzle, and the lack of rollers on the nozzle; it is much better suited to small rugs and hard flooring. It excels in smaller houses or just for specific tasks, because of its short cable and wand. Having to bend over too often makes it hard to keep vacuuming large areas.

Its ergonomic design on the other hand means that it is fantastically portable and mobile. Its really light weight, meaning it can be brought up and down flights of stairs with ease, and the canister shape, coupled with the rear wheels, means its very simple to navigate when cleaning.

With a vacuum this cheap, you don’t expect the quality of the plastics to be too high, and they’re not. If not treated properly, the shell or the hose can become cracked or damaged. But for higher quality plastic, you’d be shelling out more cash, totally defeating the point of this great value and powerful little vacuum. If its treated with proper care and not abused too much there should be no problems with parts getting damaged.

If you live in an apartment, this is a terrific purchase. Its really light and its great value. Its in its element in small areas with little carpeting. However, if you have a large house, one with a lot of carpeting, or an animal that sheds hairs a lot, then this might not be the best option for you as a main vacuum. Its still great for situational cleaning, such as a quick vacuum in the porch or a bedroom. All in all, its great for its price, that punches above its weight; but don’t expect it to out-perform a $400 cleaner.
